The PHP development team just announced the first alpha release of PHP 5.3.

The new version PHP 5.3 is expected to improve stability and performance as well as add new language syntax and extensions. As this is a development preview, it should not be used in production. It should only be used in identifying bugs and ensuring that all new features or necessary backwards compatibility breaks are noted in the documentation.
